Google search is undergoing the biggest transformation in over a decade. With the launch of Google AI Overviews, search engines are evolving from traditional lists of links into AI-powered answer engines.
Instead of visiting multiple websites, users now receive summarized answers directly on the search results page.
This shift creates major implications for businesses relying on organic search traffic.
- Organic click-through rates are declining
- Zero-click searches are increasing
- Only authoritative sources get cited in AI summaries
Ahrefs’ 2026 study of 300,000 keywords found that when an AI Overview appears, the #1 organic result gets 58% fewer clicks on average. However, companies that adapt their SEO strategy can still capture high-quality traffic.

What Are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are generative AI summaries that appear at the top of search results. They synthesize information from multiple sources to provide quick answers.
The feature evolved from Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE), which introduced AI-powered responses inside search results.
AI Overviews usually include:
- A generated answer to the search query
- Bullet-point summaries
- Source citations linking to websites
- Suggested follow-up questions

Why AI Overviews Are Changing SEO
Traditional SEO focused on ranking webpages for keywords. But AI search engines aggregate information from multiple sources to generate answers.
This means the goal of SEO is changing.
Instead of asking “How do we rank #1?”, businesses must ask:
“How do we become the trusted source that AI cites?”
Rise of Zero-Click Searches
Zero-click searches occur when users get their answers directly from search results without clicking a website.
With AI Overviews delivering full summaries, users increasingly find information directly within Google.
In Pew Research Center’s study of real browsing data, people clicked a regular search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when it did not.
Data: CTR Decline from AI Overviews
SEO studies indicate that AI Overviews impact organic click-through rates significantly.
- Position 1 CTR falls by 58% on average when an AI Overview appears (Ahrefs, December 2025 data)
- Links inside the AI summary itself were clicked on only about 1% of visits (Pew Research Center)
- Informational searches are most affected

How to Check Whether AI Overviews Are Costing You Traffic
Since 31 August 2026, Search Console has generative AI performance reports that show how often your pages appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI Overviews in Discover. They show impressions only, not clicks, so you still need to spot the click loss yourself:
- Compare two periods. In Search Console, open Performance → Search results and compare the last 3 months against the previous 3 months.
- Find the split. On the Queries tab, look for queries where impressions are flat or rising but clicks and CTR are falling.
- Check that position held. If average position barely moved, rankings are not the problem — the results page itself changed.
- Search the query yourself. Use a private window and note whether an AI Overview appears and which sources it cites.
- Segment by intent. Compare informational pages against commercial pages, since informational queries are affected most.
What to Do If Clicks Are Falling
- Put a direct 40–80 word answer at the top of the pages that are losing clicks, so they are easier to cite.
- Add FAQ structured data only where the page genuinely answers distinct questions.
- Track brand searches and leads alongside sessions, because a citation can drive a later brand search without a click.
- Follow the step-by-step tactics in our Google AI Overview SEO guide for the pages worth defending first.
- If AI features cost you more than they return, Search Console now lets you opt your whole site out of AI Overviews and AI Mode. Read what opting out really means before you use it.
